7 Things You Should Never do while Charging Your Smartphone

These days Smartphones usage has increased and many of us are using our smartphones to perform a different task. We browse the Internet, we call, we read the news, we shop online, we book tickets, as well as doing online banking these days. We also use our smartphones for many other purposes. The Comfort and convenience these devices provide are what made lives easier and hassle-free. But constant using of these devices puts a lot of pressure on the batteries, which is the main reason we charge our phone batteries from time to time.

But the problem is that most of us don’t charge our phones properly. According to research, it is possible that you are making some charging mistakes that are shortening your phone battery’s life.   1. Avoid using fast chargers: Using a fast charger may not always be the best solution for battery health. This practice sends a high voltage to your phone's battery, resulting in a rapid increase in temperature. Choose a normal charging cycle, if your smartphone offers this option in the battery settings. If your smartphone heats up abnormally, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the display turns off. Allow the device to return to room temperature before turning it on.
  2. Use your phone charger only: avoid using your friends or colleague’s charger to charge your phones, because this practice is harming your smartphone's battery. It is better to always charge your phone with its charger; the reason is that other chargers can affect your battery capacity to store charge, performance, and device longevity. And in case you use another charger, make sure that the output voltage (V) and the current (Ampere) rating equal to the original adapter or is approved by the phone manufacturer.
  3. Avoid charging your smartphone overnight. Many smartphone users have the habit of overcharging their phone. This usually occurs when we go to bed, plug in our smartphones, and leave it to charge overnight. The bad news is that because of the in-built characteristics of lithium-ion batteries, the phone battery is gradually losing its capacity with each charging cycle. This is why users usually begin to notice a significant deterioration in the smartphone battery capacity after a year of constant discharging and recharging.

    Although some modern phones come with in-built chips that prevent them from overcharging, it is better to avoid this practice. Because charging your phone overnight, every day while sleeping is similar to keeping it on the charger for about three to four months a year. This means that while plugged in, your phone is always in the state of constant recharging and discharging.
  4. Remove your phone cases while charging: Smartphone cases are good and they protect the phone's exterior from damaged and scratches, but you should always remove the case when charging your phones. This is because as smartphones heat up during charging, the protective cases block the heat dissipation.
  5. Avoid interrupting your charging till the battery reaches 80%: Always make sure your smartphone battery reaches at least 80% of its charge while charging. Furthermore, try not to disturb the charging process by removing it from the charger. Don’t forget that it is not necessary that your smartphone should always be topped up to maximum battery charge.
  6. Avoid using your smartphone when connected to a power bank. If you are asking whether it is safe to use your phone while charging with a power bank? The answer is that nothing bad will happen. But the truth is that you could be putting pressure on the phone and the cable. This will cause them to break down faster over time. It is not advisable to use your smartphone while charging. The fact is that it increases the temperature of your phone and reduces its battery life.
  7. Purchasing low quality power banks: Before buying a power bank, check the mAh capacity stated on your phone battery or in your device specs manual (if non-removable batteries). For example, if your smartphone has a 2000 mAh battery capacity, buy a power bank of at least 2500mAh battery. A poor quality lithium power bank will not only affects your smartphone performance but is also a potential threat to your device. Get power banks that provide protection against short circuit, voltage surge, overcharging and over-current.
